Farhad Hussain

Biography

Born 1975 at Jamshedpur, Farhad Hussain completed his graduation in science before joining Kala Bhavan at Santiniketan for another Bachelor’s degree in pursuit of his interest in art and followed it up with further studies for a postgraduate diploma from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda. His colourful work that includes drawings and water colours besides paintings on canvas, features day to day visual experiences of the middle-class urban India. He endows his narrative with an iconography and personality through his figuration, their posturing, dress and the surrounding imagery. The drama of subtle complexities of human relationships and social environment are grounded with a sense of satire mixed with pathos. Farhad’s colours help enhance the brightness and aura of the painting while he also partakes elements from traditions such as the formulaic textile patterns of Indian miniatures. His compositions are often set in a familiar drawing room or a social space, playing out with humour and sarcasm the narrative psychologies of human life and encounters at various levels.

(true modernism is freedom of mind, not slavery to taste)

이외에도 여러 국제전시에서 시선을 끄는 Anita Dube(1958-), Atul Dodiya(1959~ ), T.V Santosh(1968~ ), N.S. Harsha(1969~ ), Riyas Komu(1972~ ), B.M Kamath (1974~ ), Hema Upadhyay(1972~ ), Dileep Sharma(1974~ ) 등도 블루칩 작가로 뜨는 중이다.

Farhad Hussain & Indian Contemporary Blue-chip artists

'True modernism is freedom of mind, not slavery to taste.' (Tagore)

The first Nobel Prize awardee for Asian, Indian poet Tagore himself established a new university town in santiniketan at the northwest area from West Bengal state of India in 1901, and he had made an open modernism education in practice. Tagore was a philosopher and the same artist emphasized the justification of Indian art different from that of western art, and had bent one's mind to practice it through education from India.
The spirit of Indian modernism puting together the East and the West is underlying at the base of that. KALA BHAVANA-Art college of Santiniketan Visva Bharati Universty has that kind of the tradition from India and is giving a big impact to those of today's Indian contemporary art. The exhibition of 2008's "Modern Indian Art - From the everyday to the imagined" in Seoul National University Museum of Art was planned to focus on the spirit of Santiniketan same as a principle of 'Pan Asia' of Tagore advocated.
Farhad Hussain opening the first solo exhibition ever in Korea, as one of the nine artists participated above exhibition, has learned the art in Santiniketan. Farhad Hussain's works of art in the light of India and Indian Art, how to read out it, I'm trying to sweep this released after read India and the Indian art market over.

India, is one of the countries with the most severe income gap on the planet. The richest men in the world ranked 4 out of 10 is India, and the country anywhere every one of three in their people is languished by hunger is also India. Even though the level of Gross National Income per a nation is mere US$1000, It is also the country India in which a piece of modern art-work is sold for more than a million dollars. Thus the matters in India come and go between pole and pole. The comment of people's come back from India is the confusion itself as well. To witness extreme poverty, some people are freaked out, not a few people are being attracted to India shrouded in mysterious feelings.
Someone embarrassed to it owing to the picture of non-civilization in the beginning of facing india, but as it takes off the peel of dark chaos, they were brought to love India the more as being pulled by something else. Others go to India to escape from the blind faith of civilized world in which even life and death are controlled. A traveler left the diary of his Journey to India behind that landscapes of India taught of light and dark, flow and stopping, birth and destruction, chaos, and myriads of moment of vacancy and space in this universe, The charm of India lies in 'productive confusion'?

India appeals the different perspective about It in the limited view of Indian modern art. As the Western-oriented art market has been disappearing since the 2000s, so locallism brought into relief instead of that, As India has become the strong with China fastly growing and emerging as the leader of art in the world, so the prices of Indian contemporary art works in art market has risen enough to worry about bubbles .algorithm for the last few years.
Since the second half of 2008 as the international financial crisis, though there is shrink-up trend a little some, but nobody is questioning the potential of Indian contemporary art in India, The reason is the optimism about the Indian economy. India belongs into the BRICs and ICKs countries in global stock markets and already included in the major axis of the global economy. For the past few years India's economic growth has maintained the highest level. of emerged in .the world. GDP(gross domestic product) of India based in last year, beating South Korea, ranked 12th top in the world, and has enjoyed positive growth contrast to the negative growth of other countries, in the face of financial crisis . South Korea and India recently signed CEPA(포괄적경제동반자협정) between the two countries, and that is expected to fulfill significant progress economic exchanges in the future.
The art market grown by background of Indian economy enough to give expectations was able to creat many blue-chip artists in India. Some adjustments has made to the year 2007's peak, but still blue-chip artists are the matter of grave concern in India's art market. Updated prices of Indian blue-chip artists have been pressed by the media, just as relay broadcasting from the spot.
Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009) In 2005, when his art works sold for 1.58 million dollars at the Christie's New York auction of Indian contemporary art , and has been the first ever passed million dollars, it has been covered by the New York Times heavily. Since MF Husain (1915 -), SH Raza (1922 -), Subodh Gupta (1964 ~) have been joined in as an artist of the million-dollar group, the world has begun to focus on Indian contemporary art. Like this, Indian art world heats up because of the rapid economic development, populous nation, and the new finding of the value from India's long history and tradition in Indian contemporary art.

MF Husain, called Picaso of India as the symbol of modern and contemporary indian art, has left many art works being based on traditional values of India that frequently cross the boundaries of society and art based on the progressive vision from the community. Tyeb Mehta died last July, pulled off his works in the techniques of Deformantion with the affection by Francis Bacon who influenced the world of artists at the time, living and staying in Europe in 1950-60, and was a master to immerse oneself in grafting the works on the Indian mythology after come back to India.

S.H. Raza (1922 ~), after graduating from university in India, while living in abroad Paris on a scholarship from the France government, participated in the Venice Biennale in Europe, and learning the international sensation, made an effort to establish the modern formative language of art. Subodh Gupta called as India's' Damien Hirst, through the works of various genres, from a plane and a solid to install, and that exquisitely combines cultural traditions and real world of India, is fascinating the citizen of the world. And now it is the turn to watch the emergence of blue-chip artists who becomes the successor of the above star artists.
Jitish Kallat (1974 ~) who held a solo exhibition last year, has metaphorically exposed his art works between the reality of the Indian community and the inherent contradiction in it, and they are gaining a reputation in the market and galleries. Gigi Scaria (1973 ~) had as Residence program in Korea, produced the work, in korean topics such as Apartments, Mobile Phones, Cheomseongdae based on the experience in Korea, and attracted the attention of local media. He shows eager moves internationally in the area of the photos, paintings, video.
Farhad Hussain (1975 ~) who creates Pop-Art of Indian Contemporary Art in whivh humor and criticism coexist , and willing to held his first solo exhibition ever in Korea, as one of Big 10 artist of Indian contemporary art (above mentioned below) since being introduced through the exhibition of 2008's "Modern Indian Art-From the everyday to the imagined" in Seoul National University Museum of Art is also to be kept an eye on, (above mentioned below) and already the blue-chip artist who have started to receive international attention.
Chintan Upadhyay (1970 ~) to explore the plasma of Indians, Shilpa Gupta (1976~) with good reputation in the field of photo imaging can not get past . In addition, to which draw attention in several international exhibitions, Anita Dube (1958 -), Atul Dodiya (1959 ~), TV Santosh (1968 ~), NS Harsha (1969 ~), Riyas Komu (1972 ~), BM Kamath (1974 ~), Hema Upadhyay (1972 ~), Dileep Sharma (1974 ~) as well is also floating up to blue-chip artist.

Farhad Hussain was born in Jamsedpur of Bihar in India, and finished studying art at the University of M.S University in Vadodara and Visva Bharati University of Santiniketan called India's two major mountain ranges of Indian contemporary art. He stepped in 'so-called elite' course of art,
According to his work, the trails of exerting himself so that the tradition and culture of the region to which the college he studied in belongs may used so as to be nutrients in his work come out. Indian miniature painting, kalighat pats, and Japanese prints‘Ukiyoe' that have an effect on his paintings tell us about that. Indian miniature painting is the traditional art come down from the 12 century in the region of Gujarat, the location of the Baroda university, and ‘kalighat pats’is a picture that has come from in the form of folk paintings in the region of kolkatalocated near to Santiniketan. Meanwhile, the Japanese prints, ‘Ukiyoe' are supposed to have come in touch with Santiniketan where a lot of Japanese cultures have been introduced and educated. Well, then, let's check out the influence on the work of Farhad Hussain.

Indian miniature painting was drawn for religious and educational purpose such as Indian scriptures and epic poetry, and though it is flat the work recognized rich colors and decorative composition. In Farhad Hussain's work, handling contrast of the work plane came out from the atmosphere of Indian miniature painting and the decoration or interior detail at the background of people in his canvas is the same. 'Kalighat pats' characterizes theatrical elements, the emergence of the imitate animals, and humor, the features can be find in the works of Farhad Hussain.
The prints 'Ukiyoe' characterizes strong colors and the plane paintings to neglect perspective, the features also influenced the work of Farhad Hussain in the shape similar to the case of Indian miniature painting.
And besides, sound effects are given to him by the modern mass media, as well as the lives of surrounding him.
Farhad Hussain's work is full of light wittiness of Pop Art and is emerging traditional Indian culture with a long history. Characters in his work are all as the set up actors, posing and being conscious of the camera in front of them, they do not hesitate to act extremely private action. Though he was revealing uncomfortable sexual behavior, but there is ambiguity in the boundaries of gender, and among pink color is rampant in a litter, even the boundaries of reality and fiction laid scattered by the pink. To look at this upset, the delicate point of human relationship is found. To reveal this inconvenient truth kept hidden as an excuse from the stage, but it's means upset so lightly that makes a caricature of that. This duplicated structure of Farhad Hussain frees the entangled bobbin lightly at point of the meeting traditional Indian and modern Western Europe. And again returns to the comedy stage. Although his works seem to be light, but we can never see them lightly because of the reasons above.

Farhad Hussain was introduced to Korea in 2006 at first through the exhibition of "Korea and Indian Contemporary Art -honseongpung(Hybrid)" held in Seoul Arts Center. The exhibition 'Hybrid' of my curatorial at that time often appeared in the press, and then Farhad Hussain's works were actually reported for headlines' art work image out of many artist's works' photos for the press release, by several daily newspaper. Out of 29 artists participated, only one or two cases was allowed to the headline art work photo, Fathad's was chosen. Perhaps the reason was that with the nature of exhibition, Farhad's was considered as the suitable work of speaking for Indian Contemporary Art in it. In fact, it is. His work was colorful, in a character's costume of his work, and was enough to spark share of the country India. After 3 years from that time, Farhad has his first solo exhibition ever in R.O.K(South Korea). We asks the ARTIST for the WORK. The Artist replies as follows.

"My main weapon is humor. It overthrows the romantic mode of consumption that we would otherwise be happy with. Are we to laugh at my images? Or should we just enjoy them voyeuristically? I'd like to question the stereotypes we live with."(Farhad Hussain)

NHK broadcaster PD in Japan, who had produced Documentary Feature of India, has wrote that "now India is the world's surprise, this is not India's value-view point, and not the poor and the dirty of Indians, rather the fact that India is not the India as it has been, because of that the world has been shocked." in his resent book "The impact of India"
The impact of India in Indian contemporary art will be continued. I expect Farhad Hussain' work to get completed to both the Indian and the worldwide Contemporary art.

quote news
New Delhi-based artist Farhad Hussain believes that the most complex areas of relationships are nurtured by an urban, consumerist and capitalist society and his paintings bring these areas of conflict at the forefront. The humorous (sometimes provocative) figures and scenes are ambiguous in nature and make us question the concepts and stereotypes we are living in. The vibrant colours, textile patterns and bright backdrops are a trademark of the artist; while tempera on cloth is his medium of choice, as it allows him to achieve the desired vibrancy of colours. Structurally, he incorporates various elements from miniature paintings, Kalighat Pats, oriental designs and images from the media and pop culture to create an eclectic rhetoric on multiple levels. The artist has a BFA in painting from Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati University, West Bengal (2003) and a Post Diploma in painting, MS University, Vadodara (2005). He has held a number of solo shows in Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi; Gallery Soheon, Korea and Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai to name a few.
